Don't just imagine the future. Create it.
This position requires office presence of a minimum of 5 days per week and is only located in the location(s) posted.
We’re hiring an Assistant Vice President, Technical Product Management, to establish product leadership and raise the bar for technical product management within Business Support Systems Engineering (BSE) Department, part of the Consumer Technology Experience (CTX) organization. This leader will own the end-to-end technical product management function across the BSS and Supply Chain portfolio—products, platforms, and shared services—ensuring executive decisions are grounded in clear business cases, platform economics, and measurable outcomes (not delivery activity alone).
You will set the operating model and standards for technical product management across BSE, ensuring strong alignment with CTX Product Leadership to enable a product-driven model with shared priorities, clear decision rights, and coherent roadmaps—while elevating how strategy translates into sequenced roadmaps and measurable results.
You will also drive AI adoption across the technical product management function—evolving practices, standards, and governance to support the shift from SDLC to an AI-driven development lifecycle (AIDLC) and ensuring AI-enabled delivery produces measurable outcomes.
A core mandate is to drive step-change improvements in portfolio planning and delivery predictability across a large, multi-year transformation by getting ahead of sequencing, surfacing dependencies early, raising the quality of definition, and reducing late-breaking change—so engineering teams can execute with clarity and confidence.
Success requires a senior leader who blends product craft, technical depth, and financial rigor, and who can influence across Engineering, Architecture, Security, Data, Operations, and Go-To-Market partners. You’ll also bring an external, market-informed perspective (benchmarks, vendors/partners, platform tradeoffs) to improve investment decisions, execution efficiency, and platform leverage.
What You’ll Do
BSE Product Portfolio Strategy & Value Realization
Own portfolio investment strategy and prioritization for the BSE department’s portfolio of products (including supporting platforms and shared services), balancing value, economics, risk, and dependencies.
Standardize business cases and ROI narratives (unit economics, cost-to-serve, TCO, run vs. change) and ensure benefits are tracked post-launch.
Establish portfolio-level visibility and governance: integrated roadmaps, outcome metrics, leading indicators, and decision-ready tradeoff recommendations.
Product Operating Model & Talent
Own and continuously evolve the technical product operating model across BSE—including intake, discovery, prioritization, roadmap governance, and executive decision forums—ensuring strong alignment with CTX Product Leadership.
Establish clear decision rights and end-to-end accountability from intake through adoption and realized value.
Set the bar for technical product management: role definitions, competencies, career architecture, and performance expectations.
Lead the talent strategy: hiring, coaching, performance management, and succession planning to build a durable bench of product leaders in BSE.
Build a community of practice with playbooks, templates, and training that improves consistency and reduces friction for engineering teams.
AI Adoption & AIDLC Enablement
Drive AI adoption across the technical product management function to enable the transition from SDLC to AIDLC
Define standards, guardrails, and playbooks for AI-enabled product practices (e.g., AI-supported discovery, requirements/acceptance criteria, backlog quality, experiment design, and post-launch learning loops).
Establish governance and metrics for AIDLC ways of working (e.g., cycle time, definition quality, experiment velocity, adoption, and realized value), and embed them into operating rhythms and decision forums.
Partner with Engineering, Security, Data, and Architecture to ensure AI-enabled workflows and tools are adopted responsibly and at scale.
Platform Scale, Reuse, and Shared Capabilities
Identify and drive opportunities to scale BSS and Supply Chain platforms, increase reuse, and reduce duplication.
Define strategy for shared capabilities (e.g., platform services, APIs, data foundations, CI/CD, observability) and drive adoption with measurable impact.
Execution Predictability & Executive Partnership
Serve as a primary decision partner to BSE/CTX executives by framing complex tradeoffs into clear options, implications, risks, and recommendations.
Improve predictability across a complex transformation by improving sequencing, dependency visibility, and definition quality, reducing late-breaking change and execution churn.
Raise the quality of product artifacts and executive narratives (problem framing, investment memos, roadmap scenarios, success metrics, launch/adoption plans).
External Orientation
Bring an outside-in perspective by benchmarking against industry peers and translating relevant best practices into pragmatic improvements.
Leverage vendors and partners strategically using comparative benchmarks, performance expectations, and commercial/operating leverage to improve outcomes and reduce risk.
Stay current on platform and product management trends (including AI-enabled product practices) and apply them to strengthen decision-making, speed, and measurable value.
What You Bring
Master’s degree (MS/MA) in Computer Science desired.
10 years in technical product management, platform product leadership, and/or technical portfolio leadership in large-scale software/platform environments.
7+ years leading multi-team product organizations, including operating model design, org design, hiring, performance management, and succession planning (preferred).
Proven ownership of a large, multi-year portfolio across multiple products/platforms, including investment planning, prioritization, and benefits realization.
Experience modernizing product/engineering ways of working through AI-enabled product/platform practices and tooling, with demonstrated impact on throughput, quality, cost, and predictability.
Strong capability in business cases and ROI/value narratives, with a track record of measuring outcomes post-launch.
Executive presence and governance leadership; experience leading portfolio decision forums and clarifying decision rights in a matrixed enterprise.
Deep technical fluency (APIs/integration, distributed systems, cloud, CI/CD, observability/SRE, data foundations, secure SDLC) sufficient to challenge designs and guide platform strategy.
Demonstrated impact through platform leverage: reuse/standardization, reduced technical debt/duplication, improved reliability and developer productivity.
Exceptional written and verbal communication; ability to produce crisp executive materials and influence across cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred / Nice to Have
Experience across BSS, Supply Chain, or similarly complex enterprise platforms.
Experience modernizing legacy platforms while scaling new capabilities (migrations, API-first, shared services adoption).
This role is a cornerstone of AT&T’s Business Support Systems modernization, raising the bar for technical product management and ensuring every major investment delivers measurable value. At AT&T, you’ll lead transformation at scale, collaborate with industry-leading talent, and make an impact felt by millions of customers. Apply today and help build what’s next.
