The Role
The Accountant – Operating Expenses supports the accurate accounting, analysis, and reporting of operating expenses, with a focus on applying capitalization criteria under US GAAP, ensuring proper accrual for employee-related costs and benefits and non-employee costs, and administering capitalized labor processes. This individual contributor role works closely with FP&A, HR, and other business partners to ensure proper expense recognition, compliance with accounting policies, and timely month-end close activities.

Key Responsibilities
Operating Expense Accounting
Assist with month-end close activities related to operating expenses, including journal entries, accruals, and prepaid expense amortization.
Prepare and reconcile operating expense general ledger accounts, investigating and resolving variances and reconciling items.
Support expense trend analysis and provide explanations for period-over-period fluctuations.
Ensure operating expenses are recorded in accordance with company policies and U.S. GAAP.
Capitalization & Capitalized Labor
Apply established US GAAP capitalization criteria to determine proper treatment of labor-related and other eligible costs.
Support capitalized labor processes, including eligibility reviews, time-tracking data validation, and allocation calculations.
Prepare capitalized labor journal entries and supporting schedules.
Coordinate with HR, payroll, IT, and operational teams to ensure accurate labor data and appropriate capitalization treatment.
Assist with periodic reviews of capitalized labor activity to ensure compliance with accounting guidance.
Reporting, Controls & Compliance
Support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting related to operating expenses and capitalization activities.
Maintain documentation to support internal controls and audit requests.
Follow established accounting policies and procedures, escalating issues or questions as appropriate.
Contribute to process improvements related to operating expense and capitalization accounting.

Main Requirements
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
2–4 years of accounting experience, preferably with exposure to operating expense accounting.
Working knowledge of US GAAP, including capitalization and expense recognition concepts.
Experience working within an ERP environment (i.e. NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, Workday).
Proficient Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities with a detail-oriented mindset.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and cross-functional collaboration.
Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment.
Preferred
Experience in communications, technology, or capital-intensive industries
Familiarity with internal controls and audit support.
Experience supporting or executing capitalized labor processes.
Compensation
This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.
Location Based Pay Ranges:
$87,000-$142,000
